The CBSE Affiliation Journey
From idea to first batch — what happens at each stage and how long it takes.
Stage 1
Register Society / Trust & Acquire Land
Form your managing committee, register under the Societies Registration Act in your State, and acquire or lease the land. Simultaneously engage an architect and begin building plan approvals with the municipal authority.
- Choose non-profit objectives explicitly in MoA
- Land lease must be registered, not just notarized
- Hire an education consultant familiar with CBSE norms
3–6 months
Stage 2
Construct School Building & Setup Infrastructure
Build classrooms, labs, library, toilets, playground, boundary wall as per CBSE Affiliation Bye-Laws. Obtain Fire NOC during construction. Setup computer lab, library books, science apparatus and furniture.
- Do not deviate from sanctioned building plan
- Lab equipment list is available on cbse.gov.in
- Get Fire NOC as soon as building is complete
12–24 months
Stage 3
Start School with State Board Recognition
Commence classes with State Board recognition first. Run for at least 1–2 years before applying to CBSE. Hire qualified staff, build your SMC, maintain attendance records, conduct exams and build financial history.
- Keep detailed records from Day 1 — CBSE will ask
- Use Eduhub ERP Free Plan to manage records digitally
- Pay staff at or above State Government pay scales
1–2 years operation
Stage 4
Obtain State NOC for CBSE Affiliation
Apply to the State Education Department for a No Objection Certificate specifically for CBSE affiliation. This usually triggers a state-level physical inspection of your premises. Keep all infrastructure ready and documents organized.
- File RTI if NOC is delayed beyond 3 months
- Inspector checklist matches CBSE Bye-Laws exactly
- Ensure toilets, water, fire exits are operational on inspection day
3–6 months
Stage 5
Apply on cbseaff.nic.in & CBSE Inspection
Create account on cbseaff.nic.in, fill all details, upload all documents and pay the application fee. CBSE assigns an inspection committee — typically within 3–6 months. The committee visits your campus and submits a report to CBSE head office.
- Application fee: ₹25,000–50,000 (varies by level)
- Document scans must be clear — rejection for poor quality
- Keep inspection committee well-guided through campus
3–6 months after state NOC
Stage 6
Receive Affiliation Letter & Start CBSE Classes
CBSE issues the Affiliation Letter with your affiliation number. You can now formally use the CBSE name, register students for board exams, and begin marketing as a CBSE-affiliated school. Renew affiliation every 3 years as required.
- Upgrade to Eduhub ERP Pro — CBSE report card formats included
- Register for CBSE school codes for board exam students
- Mark your school on Google Maps with CBSE tag
1–3 months after inspection
